My Top Picks for Everything Eastside...
Best Beaches
Kealia Beach
I love bike riding, walking and swimming here on the Monk Seal Sanctuary bike path. It goes for miles and miles of coastal breathtaking scenery. Best way to describe it is "Hawaii meets Pebble Beach." My favorite place to begin is at
Coconut Coasters bike shop then head north on the path to the end. On the way back, I always stop at El Ray Del Mar at the best Mexican food truck available on Kauai. Ask for Victor the owner and tell him I sent you!
Wear sturdy shoes, bathing suit and bring water to drink.

Calling all breakfast lovers this is a cozy and delicious place to stop for breakfast if you like homestyle cooking. With so many choices on the menu it will be difficult to choose what to eat. Some of their favorites are the Banana macadamia nut pancakes, Luau omelette, coconut sweet bread french toast, fresh papaya and pineapple and grilled Mahi Mahi and eggs any style, just to name a few.

Kintaro's
A truly festive atmosphere with the sushi bar in one section, a room for private parties and a grill-top table where you can watch the chef prepare your meal. I love this place for all of the right reasons because it's upbeat, the service is excellent and the options are plentiful. The food is mouthwateringly delicious and I hope that everyone gets a chance for a meal here. I recommend it frequently for "the last supper" on Kauai when waiting for a later departure because it is close to the airport.

Seafood and island cuisine nightly. Even though this popular restaurant is located on the premise of a resort, don't let it fool you. It is frequented by local's on a regular basis due to their consistent reputation for serving some of the very finest meals available on Kauai. The ambiance is charming and is centered in a tropical garden- like setting and the service is top of the line. My favorite dish is actually an appetizer- the Ahi Poke Nachos.

Best Farmer's Market
Kapaa Wednesday Farmer's Market
BYB (bring your own bag) and plenty of cash
This market is a mix of backyard farmers and professional farmers, most of which are certified organic. Backyard farmers sell whatever their trees produce and have small gardens full of Asian vegetables. Professional farmers cultivate exotic fruit trees with great care, so their product is always sweeter, plumper and juicier. Conveniently located on the east side makes it easy to stop in while traveling from one side of the island to the other if you ar not staying on the east side.

Best Hike
Sleeping Giant Hike
Beginning at the East side of the mountain commonly referred to as "Sleeping Giant" the Nounou trail climbs to a peak and sheltered picnic area. I consider this a moderate hike for just about anyone. I embrace the diversity of this hike as you wind in and out of full views with plenty of sunshine and wooded areas. Wear sturdy shoes and pack a lunch. Bring plenty of water.

Best Sightseeing
Hindu Temple Gardens
I have spent a substantial amount of time strolling through these stunning gardens, dweling under the massive Banyan tree, meditating at the temple and browsing through their gift shop. I took the grand tour of the entire property once and got the full story which I found very interesting. I also purchased a book on the autobiography of the originator. The story was intriguing, having nothing to do with "Hindu anything." but the actual story about the man himself and how he pulled it all together. A great read, full of colorful Kauai history. The photo featured above is of my sister on her last visit here with me!

Opaekaa Falls Lookout
Cascading down into a hidden pool, this waterfall is easily one of the island's most accessible major waterfall lookouts. If I have been to this lookout once, I have been there 100 times. It's just a great place to see an amazing view of something that is rare. I highly suggest to everyone that comes to Kauai especially for the first time, to go here and have a look for yourself. Across the street is the Wailua River lookout, just as dramatic. It's incredible and on the way to many things such as the Hindu Temple Gardens or the Kamokila Hawaiian Village. If you are waiting to check into your resort or place of stay, or waiting for a flight off island it is relatively close to the airport.

Kamokila Hawaiian Village
This little hidden gem is off the path unbeaten for sure. They don't do very much advertising and the business is run by a local native Hawaiian family at a location directly on the Wailua River. The entrance to the property is easy to miss as you pass the Opaekka Lookout and is on the left hand side. As you enter their driveway, you will immediately be on a very steep dirt road that leads you down to the river where their check in shack and dock is located at. The village is a historical sight of an authentic Hawaiian village, where many artifacts have been discovered. I hope you check out their website to see everything they have to offer including self guided kayak tours, Hawaiian crafts, cultural tours and a whole lot more. They off one of the most authentic experiences you can have on Kauai.

Menehune Fishpond
Located just above the Nawiliwili Harbor, Alekoko (Menuhune Fish Pond) got it’s name from the legend that a small race of people known as Menehune built these ponds 1,000 years ago. The ponds which create a dam across a portion of the Huleia River was used to trap fish to feed the ali’i ( Hawaiian royalty). Large stones were used to create walls 900 feet across and five feet high. Legend says the ponds were completed overnight. The Hawaiian culture and history is very colorful and it is a remarkable landmark detailing a very rich narrative that is far more interesting than one may think. Located just off of Hulemalu Road, about 1/2 a mile from the entrance to the Nawiliwili small boat harbor. The area was designated as the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge in 1973 and now is a protected and beautiful home to many endemic water birds.

All beaches facing east have a remarkable sunrise view. If you have jet lag and are up before the crack of dawn, don't miss an Eastside sunrise.
Best Taco Truck
El Ray Del Mar
Located on the Kealia bike path with an ocean view, my favorite taco truck on Kauai. Eat there or take it to go. Everything is prepared after you order it so give them time to prepare while you soak up the surroundings. It’s fun to rent a bike and stop there to eat on the way to one of the most beautiful coastlines here on Kauai which is by the way, a Monk Seal Sanctuary. I always say it looks and feels like Monterrey meets Hawaii once you get past the dirt parking lot heading north from the taco truck. I also send my guests to eat here after they get off a flight before they check in to their place of stay or on their way off island because it is so conveniently located. Please ask for Victor the owner and tell him I sent you!

Eat Healthy Kauai
Homemade style healthy food from mostly locally sourced ingredients. Fully vegan and delicious! The backyard patio dining surrounded by palm trees and tropical flowers feels like a delicious escape. The acai bowls are fantastic and the baked goods are superb. One of my favorites is the avocado toast.
