My Top Picks for the Northside
Best Botanical Gardens
Limahuli Gardens CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO STORM DAMAGE April 19th, 2018 I will keep updated
This is my favorite garden on island due to the landscape and history. Limahuli Garden and Preserve is in a tropical valley & the garden is backdropped by the Makana Mountain and overlooks the Pacific Ocean.
In Hawaiian, the name Limahuli means “turning hands,” which recognizes the ancient Hawaiians who built agricultural terraces out of lava rock and planted cultivars of kalo (taro), an important cultural food crop. These and other plants that were significant to the early inhabitants, as well as native species, make up the garden's collections. The property includes a plantation-era garden, as well as invasive species that were introduced by modern man. Limahuli Stream, one of the last pristine waterways left in the Islands, provides a habitat for indigenous aquatic life. Behind the Garden is the Limahuli Preserve where conservationists and restoration biologists are working to preserve species native to this habitat. It was selected by the American Horticultural Society as the best natural botanical garden in the United States, having demonstrated the best sound environmental practices of water, soil, and rare plant conservation in an overall garden design.

Na Aina Kai
If there were ever a botanical garden to visit with the whole family, Na 'Aina Kai on the north shore of Kauai is it. Whereas many botanical gardens educate but often bore, the Na 'Aina Kai Botanical Gardens breaks the mold by offering an Eden-like world of cascading waterfalls, colorful plants, fish-filled ponds, gazebos, fountains and lagoons. Set on 240 acres of lush, tropical coastal land that was once used for sugarcane farming, these gardens are now an exceptional natural attraction that should not be missed. I took my father there and in laws so I have been twice. I saw things the second time that I missed the first because there is so much to learn & see. They even have a pink lemonade tree. It feels like "Disneyland meets paradise," only it's all real. I did "The Ride Tour" both times.

Best Hikes
Hanakapi`ai Falls CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO STORM DAMAGE April 19th, 2018 I will keep updated
These falls are considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world by all of the top adventure affiliates such as National Geographic. Seriously, no photograph can capture the exuberant beauty that emanates here. The Kalalau trail brings you to Hanakapi`ai beach (2 miles in) with the option to hike an additional 2 miles up Hanakapi`ai Valley to the falls. Remote and beautiful, this Na Pali hike is gorgeous but challenging. To get there you have to drive to the end of the road on the North Shore. Take plenty of food, water to drink and wear sturdy shoes you can get wet and muddy. Make sure you are out by dark. No permits are necessary for this one day hike in and out. Do not swim at Hanakapi`ai Beach. The currents are treacherous. Parking is limited so go early. When you are done jump int he water at Ke'e Beach then shower off before heading back to resort. Take 2 towels one for the hike and a clean one for the shower after.

Wai Koa Loop CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO STORM DAMAGE April 19th, 2018 I will keep updated
This trail takes you through the largest mahogany forest in the United States. Peaceful lagoons and a secluded swimming hole are some of the jewels located in the sleepy town of Kilauea. The moderate 5-mile circuit path leads you though a working farm plantation on 500 private acres and is wide and mostly flat, making it suitable for children and families. Meditate alongside a giant Buddha statue or cool off with a swim in the water that gathers above the falls. With views of Mount Namahana, as well as several quaint picnicking areas, the trail can be walked, jogged or biked within a couple of hours. Mountain bike rentals are available near the trailhead at Anaina Hou Community Park, off of Kuhio Highway near Kauai Mini Golf and Botanical Gardens. A waiver for trail use must be signed and filed at Kauai Mini Golf. There is plenty of parking as well as trail maps and mountain bike rentals. The trail is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Wear shoes you can get wet & muddy, bathing suits, bring a towel and plenty of food & water to drink or grab a bite to eat before or after at the cafe located on the property at the mini golf gift shop or at Banana Joe's next door.

The Okolehao Trail
I suggest this hike for people who just want a good quick workout and end up with a great view. The Okolehao Trail on the North Shore of Kauai is a 2.5 mile trail that will give you that workout as you climb to 1,250 foot elevation with captivating views. As you enter Hanalei cross the iron bridge over Hanalei River and take an immediate left and follow Ohiki Road (the road between the river and the taro patches) to the trail head and parking. The beginning of the trail is steep and the foliage is thick with various Hawaiian Ti, wild orchids, Lauae fern and other native plants. There are two plateaus along the trail to stop and take in the views. After the the first five minutes you will reach your first rewarding vistas of Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Bay and Makana, also known as Bali Hai. The trail is steep to the top, but the views are worth the work and the bench at the top will be a rewarding rest-stop to take in the surrounding views. Wear shoes you can get wet and muddy. Don't go if heavy rainfall occurs. The mud gets really deep. Take plenty of drinking water.

Best Kayaking & Stand up Paddle Boarding
Hanalei River
I lost my job after the crash of the market in 2007 and after that, I spent the next 7 years at the dock here on the Hanalei River selling kayak tours and beach rentals. I am now so grateful for the events following after as it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. It gave me a sense of humility I never imagined and then some. There are few places on the planet that surpass what this exact location has to offer. I consider it a true and legitimate healing space. You don't have to loose it all to get what I got. Explore the Hanalei River at your own pace at a tranquil 16-mile setting that seams to go on forever and is lined with hibiscus flowers, nesting birds, turtles and even buffalo. Stand up paddle boarding or kayaking here will leave you with a deep sense of solitude that can only come from spending time surrounded by nature. The palm tree-lined river forms on the slopes of Mount Waialeale, one the wettest spots on earth, and edges up against Hanalei town, where there are numerous surf shops with stand-up paddle boards & kayaks available for rent, and leads out into crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay. Paddling along Hanalei’s vibrant green taro fields and waterfall-drenched mountain peaks will leave you feeling like you’ve been transported back into old school Kauai.

Hanalei Town
Cradled by the verdant north shore mountains on one side and the golden sand beaches and crystal clear waters of Hanalei Bay on the other side, it’s one of the most gorgeous places and is NOT TO BE MISSED with art galleries, boutiques, surf shops and bikini shops to boot. The center of town features the historic building that used to be the old Hanalei Elementary School that washed away in the last Tsunami which is now house the town’s many shops and restaurant/bars. History and culture abound in the Hanalei area. Visit the Waioli Mission House for a free tour of this restored and preserved missionary home built in the early 1800s. Next to the Mission House is the original 1840 Waioli Church, also fully restored. The 1912 Waioli Hui’ia Church with its impressive architecture and beautiful stained glass windows is the most photographed building in Hanalei. If you are not one of the few lucky ones staying in Hanalei, you get there by driving down the hill from Princeville and crossing over the Hanalei Bridge which is considered the “gateway to Hanalei.” Make sure to wait your turn when you come to this historic one-lane bridge, the first of seven one-lane bridges on the north shore.

Kilauea Light House
I love hanging out at the Kilauea Light house especially for the views but not just for the ocean cliffs and tall grassy slopes of a dormant volcano, but because they are a gold mine of information with a fabulous visitors center and a book store loaded with loads of natural history. The refuge is a protective breeding ground for many Hawaiian seabirds. It is also one of the few locations where you can observe the ‘Ā (Red-footed booby), Mōlī (Laysan albatross), ‘Ua ‘u kani (Wedge-tailed shearwater) amongst other Kaua‘i wildlife in their natural habitat. The coastal front also provides a safe haven for the endangered ‘Ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua (Hawaiian monk seal), Honu(Green sea turtle), and Koholā (Humpback whale). You can ask about a guide at the check-in but they are not always available.
Open Tuesday -Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00pm
Closed on Sunday, Monday and all federal holidays.
$5.00 per person.
Children 15 and under are free.
All federal land passes are honored here.

Best Sunset on the North Shore
Hanalei Bay
I took this photo of my mom, my daughter and my dog Nugget at one of the prettiest sunsets I have ever seen. The crescent-shaped bay is one of Hawaii’s most scenic and pleasant beaches, especially at sunset where many of the locals gather to watch the day come to an end. It's where I raised my two daughters, where we did everything together, sailing, surfing, boogie boarding, canoe racing, kayaking, swimming and spent every 4th of July. If you get a county permit, you can camp there during certain times of the year. The waves are huge in the winter and drop in the summer.

Tunnels Beach CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO STORM DAMAGE April 19th, 2018 I will keep updated
Also called Makua Beach, it is known for its incredible mountain scenery featured in the movie, "South Pacific." A great snorkeling beach, Tunnels has something for everyone. The shallow inner reef is great for the novice and children, while the outer reefs are exhilarating for the more advanced divers and snorkelers. Tunnels gets it's name from the surfers who have seen the tube and divers who have found the caverns. Public parking, bathrooms and showers are located at Haena Beach Park just west of Tunnels.

Ke'e BeachCURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO STORM DAMAGE April 19th, 2018 I will keep updated
Located at the very end of the road. and the farthest you can drive on the North shore. It is protected by a reef that makes it a safe place for snorkeling and swimming. It is the beginning of the Napali Coast and the Kalalau trail that leads to Hanakapiai and Kalalau Beach. This special spot is beautiful at sunset. During the summer months the water can be as calm and clear as a swimming pool. During winter months dangerous conditions include high surf and strong currents. The facilities at the beach include restrooms, showers and a lifeguard stand. There is no cell reception, but there is a payphone. The parking at this beach is limited and it is advisable to park in the dirt lot about a quarter mile from the end of the road. This is the overflow from the parking at the road's end. By 9:00am the parking lot at Ke’e is usually full with hikers setting out on the Kalalau trail.

Anini Beach
There is no lifeguard posted at Anini Beach, but it is still considered to be one of the safer beaches on Kauai’s North Shore during the winter months, when the waves are higher everywhere else. Anini is the longest and widest reef in the Hawaiian Islands providing protected waters and some of the most consistent conditions for water activities. Enjoy snorkeling, beach walks, picnicking, paddle boarding and windsurfing. It is known to have strong currents in the channels and outside the protective reef. It is popular for camping and also a great beach for simply relaxing with a book or paddle boarding. The deeper and clearer water can be enticing, but it is better to be cautious and stay closer to shore. It is usually less crowded than Poipu or Hanalei and is really quite breathtaking. The beach park has multiple campsites with permits, shade trees, picnic tables, pavilions, restrooms and showers.
