Best Botanical Garden
Allerton Botanical Garden
Journey through a garden paradise, transformed through time by the hands of a Hawaiian Queen, by a sugar plantation magnate, and most significantly by an artist and an architect. The endless possibilities found in this dramatic topography led to the creation of this masterpiece of garden art. A series of garden rooms unfold between the Lāwa`i Stream and the cliffs of the Valley. The sound of water is in abundance in pools, miniature waterfalls, and fountains. Statues grace this former estate and resonate with a European influence. Once a favorite destination of the rich and famous, the Allertons hosted notable individuals such as Jacqueline Kennedy in their home and garden. The Sunset Tour is the only tour that takes visitors through select Allerton Garden rooms and to the house where the Allertons lived. At the house, visitors will enjoy the Allertons’ personal collection of pictures and memorabilia and finish the tour with a beverage and light dinner on the stunning lanai at sunset. Alcohol is prohibited on the premises.

The Eating House of 1849
I surprised my daughter and her best friends for her sweet 16 birthday here when they first opened. Paying homage to Hawaii’s vibrant culinary heritage, a nod to restaurateurs like Peter Fernandez who, the story goes, opened one of the first restaurants in Hawaii, called the Eating House, back in the mid-1800s, using what was available from local farmers, ranchers, foragers and fishermen. Award-winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi blends these two worlds: the easy ambiance and simple flavors of a plantation town with the dynamic modernity of haute cuisine. Two thumbs up, outstanding service.

Puka Dog
(They have tofu dogs for vegetarians!)
This is an entirely Hawaiian-style hot dog. First, they toast a Puka (hole) in the center of the freshly-baked buns. Next, they add your choice of garlic lemon secret sauce in mild, spicy, hot or lava along with a selection of one of six original tropical relishes: mango, pineapple, papaya, coconut, banana or starfruit. Finally, they top it off with a tasty local favorite: Aunty Lilikoi's passion fruit mustard. I love these hot dogs more than anything else on island!

Spouting Horn
Spouting Horn Beach Park is a delightful lookout where you can watch a blowhole spout a plume of sea water into the air. This waterspout occurs whenever waves are forced under the lava shelf and up through an opening in the rocky coast. Depending on the tide and ocean conditions, the water may spout as far as 50 feet into the air. If the light is right, you may be able to catch a rainbow in the sea spray. While it may seem enticing to explore the rocks near the entrance of the blowhole, it is extremely dangerous and the reason for the guardrail and warning signs. You may also see a rectangular hole in the rocks nearby. This was once a much larger blowhole that was blasted by the manager of the sugar plantation, because the salt spray was damaging a small portion of their sugar crop.

The Makauwahi Cave
This is a limestone cave that took over 400,000 years to form, through the hardening of an ancient sand dune that over time turned to stone. Approximately 7,000 years ago, as groundwater slowly eroded the limestone and dripping water flowed down the walls molding flow-stone formations, the ceiling in the cave’s central room collapsed, creating a freshwater lake in the cave. Free Tours - If you are fortunate enough to be there on a Wednesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, free guided tours are available from 10 am to 2 pm. Tours are available on other days by appointment. Visitors are also welcome to enter the cave on other days if the gate is open. Rules for visiting the cave are simple, dogs should be left outside on a leash, give the horses the right away when standing above the cave, and do not damage the native plants. The rest is for you to explore and discover.

Best Snorkeling
Poipu Beach
Poipu literally means "crashing waves" in Hawaiian, but there's hardly "crashing waves." This beach is a favorite for snorkeling and there is a little spot to the far left for very shallow "floating around" even with small children. Surfing can be seen off the western break, and is close enough to watch from the shore. This is the south shore's busiest beach and for very good reason. It's gorgeous & really fun to visit. I go all of the time-never mind the crowds. It's worth it.

Mahaulepu Beach
Further to the east is a gorgeous and idyllic stretch of golden sand that feels truly remote. Mahaulepu is a two mile car trip from the end of Poipu Road. Travel east on the dirt cane field road to the main cane haul road intersection and turn right. There will be a security shack posting beach opening and closing hours. Beach access closes at 6pm. Hours are strictly enforced by the landowner that allows public access at their own risk. Easy Coastal Hike in from Shipwrecks beach or take the dirt road in only if you have an all wheel or 4 wheel vehicle. Otherwise not suggested. Tons of potholes and the drive there could be grueling. Take a picnic & plenty of water to drink. There are no restrooms there.

Lawai Beach
Turtle lovers dream. Take snorkel gear and let the busy world just go. It's a small strip of beach fronting the Lawai Beach Resort and the Beach House Restaurant. Not visible at high tide and better suited for snorkeling in calm weather. This is a favorite spot to watch experienced surfers off this reef break when the waves are up and is also great for capturing the sunset.
